<description>When Shopping Hurts: Feeling and Facing Discrimination in Everyday Consumer Life What does discrimination actually feel like in the middle of an ordinary shopping trip? This talk presents findings from the research project DEVGAV ("Discrimination, Emotions, and Consumer Behavior"), which looks at discrimination as it unfolds in everyday consumer situations: when a young woman wearing a headscarf is treated as a suspect by store detectives, when an older person struggles with a banking app that wasn't built with them in mind, or when a wheelchair user is blocked by something as simple as a bus ramp. Drawing on narrative interviews with people from diverse social backgrounds, the talk traces how discrimination is felt, processed, and acted upon in the moment. Recurring emotional patterns emerge: shock, oscillation between anger and sadness, uncertainty about whether something even "counts" as discrimination. These often translate into quiet behavioral shifts, such as exaggerated friendliness, avoidance, or withdrawal. Sometimes they lead somewhere else entirely: collective action, complaint, legal mobilization. The talk closes by asking what this means for consumer organizations: how counseling and support structures might better recognize and respond to the emotional dimension of discrimination. DEVGAV is conducted in cooperation with ConPolicy, a Berlin-based institute for consumer research and consulting. Presented by Friederike Rosenbaum, M.A. and Dr. Matthias Schneider (Institut für Soziologie, Freie Universität Berlin), as part of the SFB 1171 "Affective Societies" event series.
